Count the Ways

I love the slow pace of early spring when the landcape is still gray and dull browns, and the thrill of seeing a pubescent bud or a colorful bloom is invigorating. Though I'm more than happy to shed my sweaters as spring is madly bursting forth, I'd like to glance back through April while I can still "count the ways."

In the woods, there were quite a few violets - blue, white and yellow.

A red maple blossom has fallen on a bed of Mninum moss.

By the creek, a delicate Uvularia nods shyly.

One more day and the trout lilies will surely open.

Hustle & Bustle

What a darling, TINY spider on the tip of a moss sporophyte!

Saxifraga on the mossy cliffs

Sanguinaria canadensis of the Poppy Family

Dwarf Ginseng

I was very excited to find this liverwort, a Scapania, fruiting.

Hepaticas are peeking up from behind a rock.

I'm always amazed by the pre-prehistoric Equisetum.

Carex pennsylvanicum is one of the first wood bloomers.

Caltha palustris, the marsh marigolds, are glowing like sunshine in the deep dark swamp.

Every one is different!

This is Corylus, our hazelnut, with the pistillate (female) bloom on top, and the staminate one below.
